Lucy Asadourian

Bronze, Life-Size

Lucy Asadourian, 85, was a mother of five, high school English teacher, graduate of Radcliffe College, daughter of immigrants, writer, and pianist. She lost her first son when he was three. This portrait was created over a period of five years, mostly during evening visits. During the course of one sitting, I would observe her pass through a variety of states of mind, while listening to classical music or stories read by her husband, while ruminating and dozing off, while telling me about her day. Over the years the shape and contours of her face inevitably changed as did my vision of what it would mean to complete her portrait.
